Knopf and Random House — jackets by R. D. Scudellari
Robert D. Scudellari was corporate art director at Random House in the 1970s and ’80s, over Knopf, Pantheon and Vintage, and designed many of their jackets himself: title and author set large, in a different hand for every book. These are first-edition jackets that a dealer’s listing or Fonts In Use credits to him, in year order, from Toni Morrison’s Sula to Robert Caro’s volumes on Lyndon Johnson. On Sula he was art director for Wendell Minor’s painting, and the last Caro volume adapts his design.
